He competed five times in the Mr. Universe (Tall Division), achieving runner-up finishes in both 1973 and 1974. Among his other accomplishments, O’Malley earned the title of Mr. World – AAU, winning in both the Most Muscular and Tall categories—further solidifying his place among the era’s elite competitors.
In 1982, he broadened his competitive scope by entering the IFBB, where he placed in the top five of the Heavyweight Division at the European Amateur Championships. He also competed in the World Amateur Championships later that same year.
